In an era where social media are increasingly playing an important role in order to connect to others in society, and in work life as well, I would like to reflect on some of the theoretical origins that attempt to explain the impact of social relationships at work. Social exchange theory, having a long-lasting history with more than only psychological ancestors, has become one of the most dominant bases to explain mutual interactions among employees as well as with the organization. Moving beyond the importance of economic exchanges, various approaches to social relationships at work have been studied in view of their exchange potential and their impact on work attitudes, behavior and cognitions.
